Duration : 05/01/2026 to 09/01/2026 India's construction sector is the second-largest employer after agriculture, employing an estimated eight crore people as of 2023. It is dominated by the most valuable segment of the unorganized labour who lack basic amenities and welfare facilities. In order to regulate the employment and working conditions of the building and other construction workers, provide for their safety, health and for generating funds for their welfare, the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act and the Building and Construction Workers Cess Act was passed in 1996. Despite a plethora of labour legislation to protect the interest of the construction workers, the workers live and work in poor conditions and have access to limited social security and welfare benefits |
